Healthy Eating Champions
The Healthy Eating Champions programme has been running since April 2007. During the first 15 months a total of 122 people received training on healthy eating, from a range of 1 day training , OCN accredited 2 day training, 4-6 week programmes and a 3 week practical cooking course. Evaluation has showed very positive results with participants reporting increased knowledge and confidence in healthy eating and promotion at health events.
The programme has also recruited many new volunteers through the training, who contribute their time, skills, and enthusiasm to promote healthy eating at over 30 community events during the first year of the programme. In addition, NFAP provide support to champions who are looking for work by providing support, advice or information on opportunities or referring them onto East Thames employment programmes.

A number of schools within Newham run successful breakfast clubs, which provide students with a nutritious meal before the start of the school day, redresses some of the imbalances seen in young people's diets and improves educational performance. Social Food Outlets and Mobile Food Store
Research carried out by East London and the City Health Authority (Food Access in East London, 1999) classified many parts of Newham as 'food deserts' (areas with limited access to shops).
To alleviate these problems, Community Food Enterprise (CFE) has established numerous social food outlets (SFO) throughout Newham. Many of its SFOs are based in community schools and sell fresh fruit and vegetables at cost price to parents. This ensures that the local community has access to fresh fruits and vegetables at affordable prices. Visit the Co-Ops Location for timetable.
CFE's mobile food store stops at selected points throughout Newham and sells fresh fruit and vegetables and grocery provisions to residents who are unable to access its SFOs.

National Training Programme for Community Food Workers
Run by CFE, this is the first programme of its kind in the country. This is a 28-session programme comprising seven units spread over four months.
The programme covers a range of issues and areas relevant to food working: food access, food poverty, nutrition, cooking skills, food policy, food, environment and globalisation.

Newham PCT Communities of Health
The Communities of Health initiative developed by the Patient and Public Involvement team widely supports local people to create, develop and transform their community settings into healthier places. This could be a community-based organisation or group of people with a particular interest; faith or religious groups;or business, work or other, place.
Communities of Health status can be achieved by creating and celebrating health within communities, and by developing a healthy partnership with the local NHS. This is an opportunity for communities to learn engagement techniques and enable community members to identify gaps in health provision within communities, and to address these through community involvement in improving services and planning new services.
For more information about Communities of Health or health events, contact Elena Vinokourova, PPI team, Newham PCT.

Newham Fit Club
Newham Fit Club is a joint venture between the council and Newham Primary Care Trust (PCT) aimed at giving local residents ways to improve their health, regardless of age, ethnicity or background.
The programme consists of a number of healthy initiatives, all designed to help local people become more active and improve their lifestyle. This includes a series of events and fitness sessions:
A Lifestyle Journal which gives lifestyle advice and tips on becoming more active for health benefits, and where to access more information.
A Road show to highlight the advantages of being active now and signposting people to where they can access more information.
The Road show travels around the borough to libraries, community centres and surgeries, where people can find out their body mass index, blood pressure, height, weight and body fat percentage.
By registering with the Fit Club, people get signposted to further help and information packs. Activities are sent out to people, together with any prominent events. People also have the opportunity to join the
Walk 4 Health programme.
There is an activity list whereby anyone who joins the Fit Club can come along and try an activity, for example archery, cricket, cycling, walking or swimming.
