Who are we?

Newham Food Access Partnership (NFAP) was set up in 2001 to bring together key partners working to improve access to healthy diets in Newham.

Key partners include:

    • London Borough of Newham
    • Newham Primary Care Trust
    • Aston-Mansfield
    • East Thames
    • Community Food Enterprise

NFAP's activities are also supported by volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Sarah Williams.

Our Vision for 2012

To create a borough where the benefits of a healthy diet are available to all by working in partnership with the community, statutory bodies, the voluntary sector, private and social enterprise, and other interested parties.

Aims and Objectives

  • To maximize equitable access to affordable, safe, healthy food.
  • To contribute towards the reduction in health inequalities and halt the rise in obesity among Newham's population by improving consumption of healthy food.
  • To increase knowledge and awareness of the links between food and health among Newham residents, and support the development of skills to put the knowledge into practice.
  • To link the national, regional and local agendas on food and health to the lives of local people.
  • To develop a food supply chain that is economically and environmentally sustainable and capable of meeting the cultural and nutritional needs of Newham’s diverse population.
  • To develop a food culture where the provision and consumption of food is an enjoyable experience, and which promotes healthy individuals and sustainable communities.

Our Approach

NFAP was set up to address food access and health issues at a strategic level. This has involved developing a Food and Nutrition strategy to guide the partnership, in consultation with statutory, voluntary and community organisations within Newham.

NFAP's activities aim to ensure that food and health issues are considered in all major decisions and projects, but also that the environmental and social impacts of our food are taken into account.

In addition, NFAP works with partners to identify gaps and priorities from within the Food and Nutrition strategy and develop projects to address these local issues, thereby improving access to healthy diets in Newham.

We also receive numerous enquiries from interested members of the public and local organisations and do our best to assist with these or signpost onto other organisations.
